Choosing a Business – Internet Marketing in Review by David Ballantyne
I've got an idea.  I've got an idea of what that idea will look like.  Now I need to figure out how to implement the idea.   In my last post, I listed my requirements for my financial independence:
  1. I Am the Boss
  2. Location Independence
  3. Don't Trade Dollars for Hours
  4. It's Gotta Be Fun
  5. Do Some Good
There are many business options that meet these criteria, including several forms of real estate investment, MLM, opening a store, and becoming a lion trainer. After a lot of research, and being a sucker for the latest trend, Internet marketing fits my requirements.
  • I Am the Boss - Every decision will be mine. The buck stops with me.  Hopefully a lot of bucks. A lot...
  • Location Independence- The entire business is online.  All I need is my laptop, an Internet connection, and coffee.
  • Don't Trade Dollars for Hours- This is one of the underlying premises of Internet marketing.  Put in work up front, and your product will sell around the clock and around the world.
  • It's Gotta Be Fun - Time will tell, but it has good potential.  Not only is do I choose what to work on (I am the boss), my schedule can be flexible enough to have fun with my family and friends.
  • Do Some Good - The projects I choose can be benificial to people.  Sure, some are purely to generate income, but a lot of them can help people.
Other benefits to Internet marketing are...
  • Low cost of entry -  It doesn't cost much to start a website.  For the price of a lemonade stand, you can start a half dozen websites.
  • Leverage of my skill set - That computer science degree should finally start paying off....   All kidding aside, it will be a huge benefit to know how a web site goes together and be able to deal with most technical issues.
  • Scalable- If a strategy works, there's now reason it can't be duplicated.
  • Huge Upside - Everyone and everything is moving to the web and the mobile web.  The marketing opportunities are huge.  The development opportunities are huge.
Sounds great so far!  There are a few hurdles to overcome.
  • Marketing - I have no experience in marketing or advertising.
  • Competitive- Everyone and their brother is trying Internet marketing.  It will be a crowded field, but if I'm as smart as I like to think, I should be a little better than my competition, and that's all it'll take.
  • Mind set- It can be tough to stay positive.  A lot of my friends, and most of my family, think I'm nuts.  They also think I'm selling Internet porn.  NO!  I'm not nuts and I'm not selling Internet porn.  Argh...   Keeping a positive and focused will be a bit of a challenge, but I think I can do it.
So internet marketing has all of the elements of what I expect from my new business.    Next is setting up my business entity.   Stay tuned...
